Responsibility for the site

Perfume Bench is published by Known by One, LLC and created by Taro Schenker, a software developer and researcher. The publisher takes responsibility for maintaining the site and receiving corrections. Naming the publisher does not imply that a qualified perfumer or safety assessor has reviewed a page.

Where information comes from

We use manufacturer product pages and supplier documentation for product-specific descriptions, and link the sources on material profiles. Introductory guides link their references. Where a claim depends on a specific product or grade, a general chemical name is not enough to establish that claim for every product carrying a similar name.

The downloadable molecular identifier records contain a selected Wikidata subset under CC0. Each record keeps the source entity, revision and retrieval date. Manufacturer-only references, search aliases, original descriptions and third-party documentation are outside that export’s license.

Identity and data checks

The identifier import compares records with a curated material-to-CAS mapping and prepares a candidate for review. A mismatched expected CAS stops the import. Multiple conflicting PubChem identifiers are not resolved by simply choosing the first value. Broad external alias lists are not automatically copied into the material library.

Library search and CSV import use names, curated aliases and recorded CAS references. CSV matches are suggestions for finding a reference, not approval to substitute a stock. Original imported names and separate material rows are retained. Supplier grade, isomer composition, purity, solvent and stock strength still need their own records.

How calculations are checked

Calculations use mass. Formula amounts describe stocks as weighed, while stock strength determines their neat aromatic contribution. A 2 g portion of a 10% stock contributes 0.2 g of neat material and 1.8 g of carrier on that declared basis.

Automated tests cover stock and batch arithmetic, unit conversion, costs, invalid inputs and preservation of existing drafts during CSV import. Browser checks exercise real editing, saving, exports and connected workflows. Worked examples make the assumptions visible. Tests establish the behavior checked by those tests; they are not laboratory validation, independent certification or a guarantee that software has no defects.

What has not been bench tested

The four starter accords are original paper exercises. They have not been mixed and evaluated by this project or assessed as finished products. Scent descriptions summarize linked references; pairings and comparison exercises are suggestions for study. They are not reports of experiments we performed.

The safety disclaimer explains the limits of the material library and ingredient-limit calculator. A percentage calculation cannot establish skin suitability or regulatory compliance.

AI assistance

AI tools have assisted with software development, research organization and drafting for this site. Source links, deterministic calculation checks and explicit limits are used to make the resulting work inspectable. An AI-generated statement or confidence score is not evidence of a chemical fact or of product safety.

The public calculators do not call an AI model. Formulas, journal entries and imported CSV or JSON files are processed in your browser, rather than sent to an AI service. We do not present an AI-assisted draft as an expert review or a completed bench experiment.

Corrections and dates

Report an error with the page URL and the source or reproducible example that supports your correction. We assess the evidence and update the affected content or tool when a correction is supported. We cannot promise a response time or that every suggested change will be adopted.

A publication date records when content first appeared. An update date records a change to that page; an identifier retrieval date records when that data was fetched. None of those dates, on its own, means a perfumer or safety assessor reviewed the material. We do not refresh dates simply to make unchanged content look new.

Supplier links and commercial relationships

The current reference links are ordinary source links, not affiliate links. The site has no advertising or paid placement system. A linked supplier is not endorsing Perfume Bench. If sponsored or affiliate content is introduced, the relationship should be disclosed where the recommendation appears.
